Synopsis
Show Boat chronicles the lives of the performers, crew and family members aboard the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, from the 1880s to the 1920s. The musical tackles complex themes such as racial prejudice and tragic love through its groundbreaking narrative. The story follows the fortunes of Cap’n Andy’s family, particularly his daughter Magnolia and her troubled marriage to gambler Gaylord Ravenal. Featuring iconic songs like “Ol’ Man River” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” Show Boat is a pivotal work that blends serious issues with the entertainment of musical theatre, making it a cornerstone in the evolution of the genre.
